A Jewish youth prepares to read from the Torah scroll. Shalom Lorenzo, “After three days they found Him [Yeshua] in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.” (Luke 2:46) The Bar/Bat Mitzvah is a milestone in Jewish life. It not only tells the world that the child has reached adulthood and is taking greater responsibility for his or her actions, it strengthens his or her identity as a Jew. In Jewish law, Jewish girls (at age 12) and boys (at age 13) become responsible for observing Jewish ritual law, traditions, and ethics. The rite of passage associated with this observance is the Bar Mitzvah for boys and Bat Mitzvah for girls. Bar Mitzvah literally means son of commandment and Bat Mitzvah means daughter of commandment. However, the term in rabbinical usage has come to mean one who is subject to the law. Once they are subject to the law, boys and girls are free to participate in all areas of Jewish community life, as we’ll read about further on in this feature article. Yeshua Among the Doctors, by James Tissot Although the ceremony today differs from its ancient past and only became a unanimously accepted Jewish custom some 400 years ago, in the Gospels we read that Yeshua (Jesus) was examined by the Temple priests and teachers at the age of 12. (Luke 2:41–52) The Brit Chadashah (New Testament) tells us that His knowledge was extraordinary and that “all who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers.” (Luke 2:47)

Remarkably kept, ancient village faces future as another kind of ghost town

For decades, the empty homes of Lifta have avoided the fate of other Palestinian towns. As luxury developers eye the site, activists, archaeologists and former residents warn no amount of historical preservation will make up for building on the hillsideBinyamin Koretz · UC Berkeley

“Dov Lieber is The Times of Israel’s Arab affairs correspondent.”

Perhaps that one sentence explains how the Times of Israel can publish this weepy tragedy of a short-lived Arab village while never mentioning a word about how Lifta was built upon the ruins of an important Jewish town that thrived in this valley for over two thousand years: Mei Naftoah.

Mei Naftoah, a Hebrew adapation of an earlier name recounting Egyptian conquest, was already a small community based around a natural spring when the Israelites under Joshua displaced the Canaanite residents and established a Jewish village that would become an important source of agricultural products for Jerusalem residents for the next thousand or more years. After the destruction of the 2nd Temple and the end of the Great Revolt against Roman rule, Mei Naftoah increased in importance as a provincial center, remaining an important Jewish town through Byzantine rule and at least until the Crusader era.

“They are the Liftawis, the original occupants of the now empty village.”

This is how the “Palestinian narrative” is handed down from one leftist Jewish idiot to the next.

The ‘Save O’Connor’ campaign, an example of Internet solidarityRome (AsiaNews) – The news that an Indian Christian, Brian Savio O’Connor, had been jailed in Saudi Arabia started to spread in Italy and Europe in late May 2004.  Indian Catholic activist John Dayal wrote King Fahd, Saudi Arabia’s ruler about O’Connor’s story, his arrest and abduction on March 25, his torture by Saudi religious police, the Muttawah.  Soon, Mr Dayal’s appeal was quickly moving along the virtual grapevine of the Internet.   AsiaNews and a few other international agencies were among the first to report the news. On June 6, an Italian Catholic Website—www. stranocristiano. com—followed Mr Dayal’s appeal and launched a ‘Save O’Connor’ campaign to gain the release of the Indian national and show that his captivity was based on religious motives hiding behind false charges. Assuntina Morresi, the mind behind the campaign initiative, wrote: “We join John Dayal in asking that Brian Savio O’Connor be set free.  Religious freedom is a universal right and no nation can call itself civilised if it denies this right. “This ‘e-campaign’ provided a brief written appeal in favour of Mr O’Connor that people could send via e-mail to Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador in Rome, Mohammed Bin Nawaf Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Saudi Mission at the United Nations and Italy’s representative in Riyadh, Armando Sanguigni. Initially, the e-campaign apparently went nowhere: no reaction, no statements from the Saudis.  Never the less, AsiaNews and advocacy groups like Middle East Concern interested in the O’Connor case started noticing increased diplomatic pressure by some countries on Saudi authorities for O’Connor’s release.  The governments of the US and Canada raised the issue with their counterpart in Riyadh.  India’s Embassy in Saudi Arabia, albeit reluctantly, became aware that international media, foreign embassies, governments and ordinary citizens were increasingly worried about the fate of its citizen. In July, Freedom House, a US group advocating religious freedom, asked US secretary of State Colin Powell to confront the Saudis with the O’Connor case during his visit to the Saudi capital. In a short time, Christian Websites of different confessions started to campaign in earnest.  English- and Spanish-language Websites, US, British and Spanish advocacy groups, some major Italian newspapers become aware of the ‘Save O’Connor’ campaign and informed their readers and members. A write-in campaign was launched.  Postcards and letters started reaching Mr O’Connor in his prison jail, all expressing support and solidarity.  From his jail in Olaya Prison, Brian O’Connor let it be known that he was grateful to all those who provided him with moral support in their messages and prayers. Information about the e-campaigns also reached the Saudi court authorities in Deerah (Riyadh) where O’Connor’s trial was taking place.  Saudi judges saw in the postcards, letters and messages proof that Mr O’Connor was the “leader of a group backed by foreign forces bent on promoting Christianity in the country”. The rest, as they say, is history: Mr O’Connor was released in early November and immediately expelled after the court was forced to reduce the charges against him to “selling alcoholic beverages”.

Brian O’Connor: “My story, a Christian in a Saudi jail”Nirmala CarvalhoExclusive interview with Brian O’Connor, an Indian Protestant accused of evangelising activities and freed after an international campaign supported by AsiaNews.   He says that in “Saudi jails there are many more Brians who need help. “Hubli (AsiaNews) – Charged with “Christian evangelisation”, Brian Savio O’Connor spent seven months and seven days in a Saudi jail, at times in chains and tortured.  The 36-year-old Protestant man from the Indian state of  Karnataka is now a free a man once again after he was released in early November thanks to an international campaign launched by AsiaNews and other Websites, Catholic and non Catholic, around the world. From his town of Hubli in Karnataka where he lives with his brother and family, O’Connor spoke to AsiaNews about his ordeal. Mr O’Connor is an Anglo-Indian.  On April 15, 1998, he arrived in Saudi Arabia to work as a baggage handler for Saudi Arabian Airlines.  In his spare time, he organised Bible study sessions in the privacy of his home, especially with Pakistanis and Arabs.  He had a hundred or so DVD with biblical themes: quotes, documentaries, films on biblical characters.  He also had over 60 Trinity Broadcasting Corporation videotapes showing Rev Benny Hinn’s sermons.  He had also installed a digital Bible in his computer. The Saudi Kingdom is home to Islam’s two holiest sites: Mecca and Medina.  The country is ruled by a fundamentalist ideology that prohibits all forms of religion except for Islam.  Its religious police—the infamous Muttawah—is ever vigilant against Bibles, rosaries, crosses or Christian gatherings.  Although Saudi princes have said that non Muslim religious practices are possible in private, the Muttawah makes no difference between private and public. Mr O’Connor, how were you arrested? On the evening of March 25, at around 5:45 pm, I received a phone call from a stranger who called himself Joseph.  He said that a friend, Orlando, wanted to talk to me about Christianity.  I did not know any Orlando and grew suspicious.  But even so, I invited him to come, along with this Orlando, to my room (the quarters my Muslim employers provided me). This man, Joseph, insisted that we meet in a coffee shop just outside my room.  I asked him who he was and from where.  He claimed to be an Egyptian national, but I was sure that he had a marked Saudi accent. As soon as I stepped outside my room, there was a convoy of three cars waiting for me with religious police who had night binoculars.  I realised then that I had been under surveillance for some time. I was bundled into one of the waiting cars and driven to a mosque.  Inside, the Islamic police chained my legs together. I am about 5’6” and this huge 6’2″ tall, hefty policeman hangs me upside down, swinging me from left to right by the chains on my feet.  Often in my cell at night I could hear the sound of the chains ringing in my ears. I was battered in this upside-down position for more than an hour.  I was kicked and punched and whipped.  I was unable even to ward off the punches to my face, as my hands were tied behind my back. It was nearly midnight and I was weak from the torture when a policeman brought some papers.   In between the torture sessions, he forced me to sign statements in which I confessed that I had in my possession Biblical DVDs and CDs and was engaged in evangelising activities. I told them that private religious meetings were not illegal, but they kept on saying that any religious activity other than Islam was prohibited. I was then asked to sign a confession in which I acknowledged that I was selling alcohol. I may have been in severe physical pain and I may have been exhausted, but I refused to sign this false statement.  I told the Muttawah officer, how could I, a preacher and believer in Jesus, be selling alcohol? [Evangelical Christians refuse and prohibit alcohol use. ]Tell us about your life in prison .  .  .  I was miserable and, at times, frightened, not knowing what new false charges would be levied against me, all my personal belongings confiscated, my room ransacked. I was also worried about the distress my arrest and imprisonment would cause to my family back home in India. I was imprisoned in a cell with 17 other inmates, people convicted on charges ranging from murder to drug peddling and other such heinous crimes. The section of the prison where I was confined had 14 cells.  There were few guards but our movements and conversations were closely monitored by cameras which monitored our every move. There was no problem with regards to food as Indians and Saudis more or less eat the same things. I did manage to maintain some contact with people outside with the help of “illegal mobile phones” which were smuggled in for me by the guards for a price. Did they let you pray?Initially, whenever I tried to pray, I faced stiff resistance and antagonism from my fellow cell mates.  Within a month of my arrest however, I had befriended some of the 17 convicts who petitioned the jailer to allow me to pray.  I did, but only between Muslim prayers.  I had to keep a strict discipline and remain silent during their five daily prayers. How would you describe your time in prison? As a blessing in disguise.  I feel privileged for suffering in the name of Jesus.  Besides, my time in prison has meant that 21 people have come to know Jesus.  Thanks to this ordeal I have emerged stronger in faith and endurance.  The Lord has confirmed my mission as an evangelical preacher. Are you sorry you ever went to Saudi Arabia? No! As I said, it was a blessing in disguise.  In 2003 I was offered a job in Great Britain but I turned it down.  Perhaps, it was the Holy Spirit’s doing.   If I had accepted I would not have been able to bear witness to the Gospel in a Saudi prison.  On September 15, 2004, Mr O’Connor was brought to court on charges of selling alcohol, drug use, possession of pornographic material and spreading Christianity.  Under Saudi law, these charges are punished by life in prison. The judge however decided to separate the evangelisation charges from the rest.  For this charge, he was supposed to be tried by the High Court.  For the others, he was tried there and then with Muttawah agents called to testify. In the meantime, a campaign for Mr O’Connor’s liberation was launched.  Eventually, Prince Naif, the second ranking prince in the Saudi royal family, wrote to the court ordering it to drop all charges.  But on October 20, despite the Prince’s intervention, the court met to try him for his alleged alcohol sale.  How could they charge you with selling alcohol?According to the prosecutor, a man sent by the Muttawah told the religious police that he bought alcohol from me paying with marked banknotes.  They alleged that I was found with the marked banknotes and charged me with selling alcoholic beverages.  They said that I had sold ten 1-litre bottles of alcohol.  I then threatened to appeal to the High Court and asked them for proof: whether they had my fingerprints on any of the bank notes or on the ten bottles.  They said that they had no such system in Saudi Arabia.  I was then sent back to my cell. You were sentenced to 10 months in jail and 300 lashes, what happened to you afterwards? The seven months I had already served were a part of the 10 month sentence for selling of alcohol.  Praise the Lord! I was not whipped.  This only proves that [.  .  . ] there is no coordination between the Saudi police and the Government.  Then, one night I was driven to a Saudi airport and put on a flight to Mumbai, where my brothers in Christ picked me up. An interesting point is that my colleagues in Saudi Arabia said that I was still scheduled to appear before the court on November 6 on the alcohol charges.  How ridiculous .  .  .  Such efficiency! As you may be aware, Asia News launched an international campaign to secure your release .  .  . I am very grateful to AsiaNews for the international campaign that was launched on my behalf.  I am also thankful to ‘Christian Solidarity Worldwide’ and ‘All India Christian Council’ for their assistance.  I especially want to thank the readers of AsiaNews for the postcards and letters that kept pouring in from around the globe.  But please tell the world that there are many more Brians in Saudi Jails waiting for some help.

This may indicate that even the Messiah was Bar Mitzvahed, passing through the rites of His day. As one of few events recorded about His early life, Scripture certainly highlights this event as important. It is, perhaps, the oldest record of a Bar Mitzvah. Today, the Bar and Bat Mitzvah is a central rite of passage for all Jewish people, including Jewish Believers in Messiah. A Jewish girl has her Bat Mitzvah in Jerusalem near the Western(Wailing) Wall. He is also a well-known Messianic performer of psalms and praise music. In the above lyrics, he sings about his introduction into the status of manhood in his local synagogue. The song suggests he had a rather positive experience.

But after describing his wonderful Bar Mitzvah, he suddenly laments, “And they won’t let me get Bar Mitzvahed again.” This is a common experience for young Jewish men who find themselves the center of attention of their Jewish congregation for one brief day, complete with a showering of gifts and praises, only to have to go through life afterword just like everyone else, usually never again enjoying such attention and praise. Aware that something was missing in his life, Marty found wholeness when he invited the greatest Jew who ever lived (and still lives) into his life, which prompted writing this song. Marty Goetz performs “A Jew Born Anew” (YouTube Capture) The Development of a Tradition There is really no clear basis for the tradition of a Bar Mitzvah, nor is there a command in the Torah (Five Books of Moses) to observe one. One opinion in the Midrash (compilation of Rabbinic teachings), however, traces the source of the tradition to Genesis 21:8: “And the child [Isaac] grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.” The Midrash states that this weaning brought Isaac into manhood at the age of 13. This opinion has since found its way into much Jewish literature. (Chabad) As it is practiced today, at the age of 13, a boy is considered to be a man and is now responsible to keep all of the commandments. Bar Mitzvah in a Synagogue, by Oscar Rex Thirteen is also the age at which his vow is now valid. The Talmud (Niddah 5:6) rules that from the age of 12, the vow of a girl is valid which is why girls are Bat Mitzvahed at age 12. This is also the age at which they become accountable for their own actions. It is only in mid-20th century America, however, that the Bat Mitzvah ceremony has become identical to the Bar Mitzvah celebration. Beginning in the 19th century in regions such as Eastern and Western Europe, Egypt, and Baghdad, recognition of the girl’s coming of age was celebrated with a private blessing, a father’s aliyah to the Torah (going up to the bimah to read the Torah), the sermon given by the rabbi, and the girl’s public examination on Judaic subjects. (Jewish Virtual Library) Jewish girls in Alexandria, Egypt have their Bat Mitzvah. This photo wastaken prior to 1967. Marriage and Other Privileges By rabbinic tradition, a Bat Mitzvahed girl is minimally qualified to marry, although 18 is considered the proper age for marriage and 20 is the age for venturing out to earn a livelihood. Also at this age, boys may now serve as the cantor or chazzan in the synagogue and be called to read the Haftarah (Prophetic Reading) from the book of prophets. And among observant Jews, a young Bar Mitzvahed man begins to wear the tefillin (phylacteries) during morning prayers.

He can now read from the Torah in the synagogue and be granted an aliyah. An adult shows a boy how to wind tefillin (phylacteries) around the hand. He can also lead grace after meals and be counted as a part of a minyan (the required quorum of 10 for corporate prayer). If the boy is a kohen (descendant of Aaron), he can pronounce the priestly blessing. He must also now participate in fasting on fast days, such as Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) and the Fast of Esther the day before Purim. “The thrill of attention received on my Bar Mitzvah was extended when the rabbi trained me to lead the Friday night services as the chazzan and to chant the Haftarah on Shabbat mornings. Of course these are activities that any male may perform after having been Bar Mitzvahed as long as he is able,” said Barry, a member of the Bibles For Israel team. “I was also able to use the Jewish literacy skills that I attained through learning my Bar Mitzvah Haftarah reading to train others, some of whom are Messianic Jews including my own son.” Messianic Believers most often find that synagogues are unwilling to Bar Mitzvah their children. Moreover, becoming a Jewish Believer can result in Bar Mitzvah rights and privileges being stripped in the local synagogue. “I apparently lost my Bar Mitzvah rights, however, when I revealed my belief in Yeshua to the rabbi in Cincinnati where I lived. As far as he was concerned, I was no longer a Jew and I was excluded from being counted as part of the quorum of 10,” Barry said. “At the age of nine, I followed a full day of public school by taking the bus to the Hebrew Institute which was where the Jewish community’s Hebrew afterschool classes were taught for young Jewish boys and the occasional girl,” Barry said. “It was there that I began to learn in detail what it means to be a Jew, to start wearing the undergarment called the tzitzit and to learn to read Hebrew so that I could participate in the daily rituals, starting the morning with the prayer upon rising: “Modah ani lifanecha…” (“Thank you Lord for mercifully returning to me my soul”), as well as the various prayers before eating or drinking, the prayer after meals, and the prayer before going to sleep at night.” Barry was told that since it was necessary to pray throughout the day, he would need to keep his head covered with a kippah (yarmulka or skull cap). “In later years, I exchanged taking the bus for peddling my English Racer bike up steep hills in all kinds of weather to get to Hebrew School. It made for long days and cold nights, but it also made me a Jew,” Barry said of his commitment to learning. “Even so, when I got to Israel I found my Hebrew skills almost nonexistent when trying to actually communicate in the language.” Women observe the Bar Mitzvah of a male relative from behind the fenceduring a Bar Mitzvah in the men’s section at the Western (Wailing) Wall.(Photo by Dan Lundberg)

Barry’s learning involved more than Hebrew language skills. He also learned a little about Jewish life in WWII when his schoolteacher shared with him how he escaped the Warsaw Ghetto by distracting the guards into thinking that someone was trying to scale the wall that surrounded the Ghetto, and then he did so himself. This same teacher survived the war working in a hospital. During a bombing raid, he was praying the morning prayers wearing his tefillin and refused to go to the bomb shelter during the raid. At the same time, a bomb fell through the roof of the hospital, traversing all of the floors but did not explode. After that, everyone thought he was a saint and responsible for the miracle that saved their lives, Barry said. A 13-year-old Jewish boy carries the Torah scroll publicly for the firsttime at the Western (Wailing) Wall in Jerusalem. Bar Mitzvahs for Adults A good many Jewish adults who missed their Bar/Bat Mitzvah feel that they have also missed an essential piece of their God-given heritage, so they decide to celebrate it as an adult. A popular spot for parents and adults to celebrate this occasion is at the Western Wall that once lined the Temple Mount platform in Jerusalem. Some say that as early as Second Temple days, the Bar Mitzvah boy would be brought to the Temple courtyard to have their knowledge “tested” by the priests and elders. In 2012, actor David Arquette, whose mother is Jewish, was Bar Mitzvahed at the Wall at the age of 40. “He was very emotional, saying he was happy to be part of the chain of the Jewish People,” said Western Wall rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz, who presided over the ceremony. “I’m very pleased to see a man who is returning to his roots.” (Arutz Sheva)

A Jewish youth prepares to read from the Torah scroll.

Shalom LorenzoJHWH,

“After three days they found Him [Yeshua] in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions.” (Luke 2:46)

The Bar/Bat Mitzvah is a milestone in Jewish life.

Yeshua Among the Doctors, by James Tissot

Although the ceremony today differs from its ancient past and only became a unanimously accepted Jewish custom some 400 years ago, in the Gospels we read that Yeshua (Jesus) was examined by the Temple priests and teachers at the age of 12. (Luke 2:41–52)

The Brit Chadashah (New Testament) tells us that His knowledge was extraordinary and that “all who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers.” (Luke 2:47)

Marty Goetz: A Jew Born Anew

Well I had a Bar Mitzvah when I was thirteen,

the greatest Bar Mitzvah that you’ve ever seen.

The temple on the corner of Mayfield and Lee

was filled with my friends and my family,

all of them proud as proud could be,

with catering far as the eye could see—

complete with a chopped liver statue of me!

(Lyrics excerpted from the song, “A Jew Born Anew”

© 2011 Marty Goetz Ministries)

Marty Goetz is a good Jewish boy who grew up in Cleveland, Ohio in a relatively observant Jewish family.

He is also a well-known Messianic performer of psalms and praise music. In the above lyrics, he sings about his introduction into the status of manhood in his local synagogue. The song suggests he had a rather positive experience.

But after describing his wonderful Bar Mitzvah, he suddenly laments, “And they won’t let me get Bar Mitzvahed again.”

This is a common experience for young Jewish men who find themselves the center of attention of their Jewish congregation for one brief day, complete with a showering of gifts and praises, only to have to go through life afterword just like everyone else, usually never again enjoying such attention and praise.

Aware that something was missing in his life, Marty found wholeness when he invited the greatest Jew who ever lived (and still lives) into his life, which prompted writing this song.

The Development of a Tradition

There is really no clear basis for the tradition of a Bar Mitzvah, nor is there a command in the Torah (Five Books of Moses) to observe one.

One opinion in the Midrash (compilation of Rabbinic teachings), however, traces the source of the tradition to Genesis 21:8: “And the child [Isaac] grew and was weaned, and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.”

The Midrash states that this weaning brought Isaac into manhood at the age of 13. This opinion has since found its way into much Jewish literature. (Chabad)

As it is practiced today, at the age of 13, a boy is considered to be a man and is now responsible to keep all of the commandments.

Bar Mitzvah in a Synagogue, by Oscar Rex

Thirteen is also the age at which his vow is now valid.

Marriage and Other Privileges

By rabbinic tradition, a Bat Mitzvahed girl is minimally qualified to marry, although 18 is considered the proper age for marriage and 20 is the age for venturing out to earn a livelihood.

“I was also able to use the Jewish literacy skills that I attained through learning my Bar Mitzvah Haftarah reading to train others, some of whom are Messianic Jews including my own son.”

Messianic Believers most often find that synagogues are unwilling to Bar Mitzvah their children.

Bar Mitzvah Preparations

A Bar Mitzvah doesn’t just happen; the boy to be Bar Mitzvahed often prepares for several years.

Barry started to prepare when he was nine.

“At the age of nine, I followed a full day of public school by taking the bus to the Hebrew Institute which was where the Jewish community’s Hebrew afterschool classes were taught for young Jewish boys and the occasional girl,” Barry said.

“It was there that I began to learn in detail what it means to be a Jew, to start wearing the undergarment called the tzitzit and to learn to read Hebrew so that I could participate in the daily rituals, starting the morning with the prayer upon rising: “Modah ani lifanecha…” (“Thank you Lord for mercifully returning to me my soul”), as well as the various prayers before eating or drinking, the prayer after meals, and the prayer before going to sleep at night.”

Barry was told that since it was necessary to pray throughout the day, he would need to keep his head covered with a kippah (yarmulka or skull cap).

“In later years, I exchanged taking the bus for peddling my English Racer bike up steep hills in all kinds of weather to get to Hebrew School. It made for long days and cold nights, but it also made me a Jew,” Barry said of his commitment to learning. “Even so, when I got to Israel I found my Hebrew skills almost nonexistent when trying to actually communicate in the language.”

Bar Mitzvahs for Adults

A good many Jewish adults who missed their Bar/Bat Mitzvah feel that they have also missed an essential piece of their God-given heritage, so they decide to celebrate it as an adult.
